Introduction
Chest pain is a common chief complaint at the emergency department (ED) and may be a symptom of serious heart disease. The initial investigation focus to rule out acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and about a quarter of the patients are admitted for observation, further investigations or treatment although only a minority (3-5%) are discharged with an ACS-related diagnosis. Patient-history, ECG and troponin testing is central for the initial assessment. In December 2014 a new treatment algorithm was introduced in SLL for all patients with the chief complaint chest pain and suspicion of acute coronary syndrome. The algorithm included a structured scoring system (HEART-score) and serial troponin testing at baseline and after one hour.
